Swimsuits for all shapes and sizes
Summer is around the corner and the annual task of hunting down a swimsuit that looks great and accentuates your assets doesn’t need to be daunting and this year you have our help!
Whether you love swimming laps or attracting hunks at the beach your swimsuit should flatter you and feel comfortable.
Here are some pointers that can help you make a decision when choosing a swimsuit for your body type.
Body Type: Big Bust
The main thing to look for in a swimsuit is support for your bust. Long gone are the days where you were restricted to buying a ‘bra style’ underwired top. Now you can find halter necks that are just as flattering and supportive.
Whether you are going for a two piece bikini or a one piece swimsuit make sure you find a top that fits your bust perfectly for maximum support (no wires digging in the wrong places) and that has a high content lycra and thicker straps for added comfort.
In a nutshell:
- Look for hidden support from underwire and thicker straps;
- Look for high content lycra swimsuits - supporting your bust as well as the waistline;
- Halter tops are a great way to hold up your bust and flatter your figure.

Body Type: Small Bust
If you are looking to accentuate your bust line opt for a swimsuit that has added padding and a deeper neckline. V-line or triangle tops are great as are string bikini styles.
You can also opt for lighter colours, metallic fabrics, gathering, large print or frilly tops.
In a nutshell:
- Look for padding or a deeper neckline;
- Add oomph to your bust with frills, large prints or metallic fabrics.

Body Type: Athletic/Lean Figure
If you are lean and less curvy, you can find a swimsuit that sets off your femminine characteristics.
Stay clear from bandeau tops and boy leg shorts. Instead, opt for halter bikinis or tops with padded cups if you have a smaller bust. You can wear pretty much any print, frills, bows and ties at the side as these all add femmininity to your swimsuit and curves to your figure.
One piece swimsuits with cut outs are great for creating sexy curves.
In a nutshell:
- Try to wear feminine suits with flirty details like bows or ties on the side. These details create visual curves.
- You can go for any print, tribal designs and florals are popular this season.

Body Type: Wider hips/Pear-Shaped
If you are curvier around the hips then you want to even out your figure by drawing attention to your top half. Choose a swimsuit that has more detail on the top or strapless swimsuits.
Tankinis are a great option as you can separate the bottom from the top and they accentuate your bust and waistline. You can choose a darker block colour for the bottom (which will make you look slimmer around the hips) and choose a printed top or a top with detail around the bust such as frills or bold, colourful prints.
In a nutshell:
- Draw attention to your top half by wearing and eye-catching detailed top;
- Your bottom piece should sit well on your hips and it should be a shade darker than your bikini top.

Body Type: Plus-Size
Yes black bathing suits do make you look slimmer but summer is about having fun and enjoying the bright sunny days. There are so many beautiful swimsuits with prints and colours for fuller figured women so why should you stick to boring black?
The main things to look for in a swimsuit is bust support and tummy control. A swimsuit with a waistband style, scrunched fabric or different top and bottom colors are great. Also, lower cut legs are more flattering than hi-cut styles.
You can also opt for a dress style swimsuit but make sure it has bust support.
In a nutshell:
- If wearing repetitive prints such as polka dots make sure the print is small;
- If you aren’t ready to wear color this summer, black and white is huge classic trend and you can easily brighten up the look with a colorful sarong.

Body Type: Maternity
Congratulations on your baby bump! There are so many swimsuits to cater for your changing body but they can get expensive.
The best maternity swimsuits are two piece tankinis as they provide coverage, support and are versatile. You can upgrade the top as your baby bump grows and there is special support for your bustline. A lot of maternity swimsuits have adjustable top and bottom pieces which allow for growth and can be worn after baby is born.
In a nutshell:
- There is no need to spend a lot of money on a suit when you are only going to be pregnant for nine months and summer only lasts for 3 months.
- Buy one suit that is adjustable - look for rouching on the side of the top and an adjustable waistband on the bottom that can be let out so the suit expands with you and shrinks with you after baby is born.
- Be proud to show your bump as every pregant woman is beautiful!!
